A walker's and cyclist's paradise!
Co. Mayo offers plenty of planned trails and guided walks are available in various locations. Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain, Slievemore and Croaghaun on Achill Island, Clare Island, Nephin Beg Range, the Western Way, the Foxford Way and the Bangor Trail, the wild North Mayo Cliffs - are just some of the many outstanding walking trails and areas.
The Lettermaghera Loop (picture) on the lower slopes of the Nephin Beg Mountains is a easy 10 km Loop Walk which begins 3km west of Newport - only a few minutes from the house.
The cottage is only a short drive from the starting points of this and other Loop Walks between Newport and Mulranny. For more leisurely walks try the quiet country lanes, the river and coastal walks near our house.
The Great Western Greenway is the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland. Following the old Westport / Achill railway line (which closed in 1937), this 42km traffic-free route is ideal for getting out on a bike and experience this spectacular landscape away from road traffic.
Bicycle hire is available in several locations in Westport and Newport.
